Week 4- September 12-16

Everything old is new again and we're not so different from the ancient scops who sought to mourn their losses and to immortalize their heroes. Drawing upon the heroic tradition, write an original poem to a relevant current event. You might choose the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing (April 19, 1995), The Ma y 3 Tornado (1999), or the many tragedies of September 11, 2001. You may use whatever form seems most appropriate traditional or free verse, but try to capture the appropriate tone. Post your poem here.

Respond to two other poems written by your classmates. What mood does their poem convey? Why?

Examples of poems, you don't HAVE to use these. It can be free verse.

  1. 9/11 Poem
A sad day for the American People
A joyous day for the evil in hell
    A mighty beast awoken
ON the day the towers fell

  2. 9/11 Poem

    From Boston to L.A.,
    Flew a plane by AA.
In which went the wrong way,
Which caused the U.S. a lot of pain.

    As it crashed we watched,
    As it brought sad thoughts.
It brought tears to our eyes,
And caused the country to reunite.

    To: Miguel Mainegra
Its short, simple, and to the point. i would love to read poems like that all day.

  3. 9/11 Poem

A day that will forever be in my heart,
Destroyed families and tore them apart.
    I didn't believe my eyes,
    It caught everyone by surprise.
    So brutal and unexpected,
    Thousands and thousands were affected.
    Some lost friends, others family,
    Everything just happened so rapidly.
So many individuals risked their lives,
And at the end of the day, only a few survived.

*Miguel, like Rolando said, short but straight to the point. His poem conveyed the tone of sadness and sorrow.

*Rolando, very true. After that tragedy, the country did unite. Everyone was so sad about losing loved ones, that we all just leaned on eachother for confort. Rolando's poem, like Miguel's conveyed the tone of sadness and sorrow.

  4. 9/11 poem

    Plans were made
To destroy the country of the United States
    Two towers fell
    And many lives destroyed

Many watched as loves ones suffered
    Tears rushed down faces
    We all felt the sadness
    What a madness !

    Together we stand
    Together we fall
    We are one
    Nation under God

    * Giselle and Rolando, I loved both of your poems , as they were short and concise. I felt as if your mood was of sorrow and mournful. By the way , I liked your rhyming skills.

  6. 9/11

    Sad but true
It took two towers to fall
    and thousands of lives
    for our nation
    to finally come together
    as one.
    Better late than never
    our people showed
    strength and courage
    we as a nation
    proved no one
    can bring us under
    because we will
    ALWAYS fight back
    together as one!

  7. miguel mainegra, Your poem conveyed mostly sorrow but sadness as well, because your right it was a devastating day for us all. Even though we were young and may not have understood what was going on we still felt the pain. Watching it on the T.V or hearing about left us in shock. (It was simple but gets the point across.)

MelissaPP4, I love your poem. Your poem conveys sadness because of the way you say how lives were destroyed and people were suffering. My favorite part was how you incorporated the pledge of allegiance into it!

  9. Precious lives were killed in
    a blink of an eye
    before us lives were
    gone in a heartbeat
    innocents suffered
    making this day a sad
    and unforgivable one
    which shall forever be
    imprinted on our lives
    But it somehow made our
    nation a stronger one
    though it wounded us
leaving a scar in our hearts.

  11. Melissa I loved your poem it was short and sweet to the point. Your poems has a sadness to it that overwhelms the reader with sentimental feelings towards this day once again.

Miguel I also do love your poem it conveys a dark mood as a war between heaven and hell. it's almost as it was a sinister mood as this was taking place and won by the dark side therefore releasing chaos into the world forever .

  12. Destruction of twins tower
    collecting world's tear
    Wives lose husband
    while kids lose father

    Sad flowers
    Gathered in front of tombs
    Lovely flowers
    show family's loves

    The huge loss
    caused by terrorists
    who are condemned
    and never be forgiven

To Miguel Mainegra, your poems is concise and lucid. I like it a lot. The evil terrorists destroy towers and kill a lot people, and other people are very sorry for the tragedy.Your lines tell the truth and convey the sorrow.

To Natalia Magdaleno, I like your poems, words in your poem are strong, and they convey the sorrow.

  13. We all saw,
    We all watched with tears
    in our eyes,
as a chaotic crisis struck the nation
    at 8:46 am

    They all saw,
    They all watched with fire,
    such excitement,
    in their eyes,
as the flames engulfed the american flag

    We all saw,
    We all watched an opurtunity
    rise above the rubble

    They all saw,
    They all watched with envious
eyes as one nation under God,
rose from the dust and debris,
    One nation that will
    Never Forget
    ~Jazmine Quinones

To Miguel: To be honest one of my favorite poems, it was very short and to the point. But it also carried so much emotion. Sorrowful but yet powerful.

To Huimin: I love yours too! It conveys sadness and is short and to the point as well. I loved how you used phrases rather then sentences, which shows you can make a statement without many words.

  14. Let us all remember
    that painful day in September
and the ones who asnwered dutie calls,
from the ones who became heroes,to those who lost their lives, and even the evil ones

The ones who bravely gave their lives,
whose orphaned kids and widowed wives,
will proudly look back on their dad,who gave
    this country all they had

The ones whose evil actions stroke our hearts
and our nation. But lets not ever forget the ones who paid the ultimate price
    And the ones who sacrificed

    The ones no longer here,
who we dearly hold in our hearts.
Let us all remember that painful day
    in September

  16. 9/11/01
To those who lost a father
To those who lost a husband
To those who lost a friend
This day will live in our hearts forever
    We will never forget

    Planes flying,
    Planes crashing,
    Buildings collapse,
    And people dying
In the midst of this chaos
    Running, crying, screaming
News rooms in chaos and panic

With the world watching us in agony,
As we search for ourselves and others,
Trying to figure out what happened
    Catching us by surprise ,
    Many died
    But many survived
    Due to heroes who sacrificed

    WE WILL NEVER FORGET 9/11

  17. I think Jazmine's poem is gret it portrays the feelings of the terrorist and our reaction as a nation. Her poem's mood is one of strength because she shows strong emotions.

I also think Melissa's poem is great it portrays a mood of sadness. She shows the emotion of Americans.

  18. The two twin towers
    Both fell within two hours
    Blown up under Al-Qaeda's power
Bin Laden's mind must be sick and sour

    Over 3000 deaths
    Just around 6000 in pain
What's wrong with Osama, what's he on crystal meth?
    Al-Qaeda went crazy, completely insane

They used aircrafts that were hijacked
Those people with their suicide attacks
Running around bombs strapped to their chest, kamakazes
They need to start being like those Anasazi

How could they aim for the Big Apple?
They should extend their time in the chapel
We are stronger that them #1 in the world
They need to wake up from their dreamworld

To BrandonM, it conveys sorrow because of the people who lost loved ones during 9/11

To Miguel Mainegra, it conveys sadness because of the sorrow that was felt in the American people.

destroying them in just a few horus.
Everyone is in the race to save each others live,
but not many of them survive.

This day will always be well known worldwide.

  23. Teared apart our hearts were
    When the twin towers fell.
It was in a blink of an eye but they will
    Never be forgotten, neither the

Thousands of lives that were killed and the many that died in the sacrifice
Of helping others. This event made our nation stranger yet
We will never forget those lives. Lets
    Embrace this moment and
    Remind ourselves that together we
    Stand and “untited” we’ll fall.

To Brandon M. your poem was really inspiring and motivating. It makes people think of those who sacrificed their lifes to save others like a true hero that they are.
To Geisa G. your poem was straight and precise and right to the point but I like it because it is true everything happened in a few hours and we didn't even expect it.

  25. For those killed on September 11,
may all 2977 victims have gone straight to heaven
For the twin towers, which once stood tall gleaming with American pride,
Its significance will live in our hearts worldwide
For those against us far and near,
Hear our message loud and clear,
For America's the land of the free,
and, for many years to come, will continue to be

Rolando: I really liked how you decided to end your poem on the fact that the tragedy brought Americans closer. Your poem conveyed sadness and sorrow of the events.

  26. it took only seconds
    to impact on this day
    where almost 3000 lives
in our hearts will forever stay
the pain one must feel to see it happen all
to see these two memorable towers fall
hatred filled the minds of those
    who tore down the towers
thinking they had all the power
if they ever cross this way
    to bomb the USA
    regardless of the tragedies
united as one whole we shall stay

p.s. i suck at writing so bear with me :)

in stephanies poem i love how she addresses some of it to the actual terrorists. saying that we'll always be free and they have to deal with that.

the mood in roberts poem is very confident. i love when he says whats wrong with osama is he on crystal meth. i think thats too funny. it just spiced up the whole poem making it that much more interesting to read.

    When the towers fell
My heart was in a well

    The country felt a burn
    The planes had no return

    The lives that were surrendered
    Will always be remembered

    Although lives were at threat
    911, We will never forget....

To Giselle Jimenez: I love how you in your poem you emphasize that even though this was a day of destruction, those lives that were lost and their families will never be forgotten.

To Vanessa D: I agree, 9/11 happened in the blink of an eye. The tragedy was hard to grasp, but we all set apart our differences, came together and stood united in this time of sorrow.
