Week of 8/28/2011- Week 2
Respond to the following question. Also respond to two of the responses from your classmates.
After reading "The Man in the Water" and exploring the epic hero characteristics, what makes a true hero? Use examples from your readings and real life.
A true hero is the one who acts with courage and heroism in any situation.Heroes are those who do personal sacrifices even if they have to put their lives in risk. They are the kind of people who is there for anybody who needs help without worrying for themselves or the recognigtion they might get.Heroes are courageous, selfless and noble.
A true hero is not just that men we see in cartoons trying so save the world; you don't have to risk your life to be a hero, and you really don't have to work as a fire fighter or something like that to be a hero. This people is well trained to do what they do and the get paid to do it so they are not actually that motivated by the good of their hearts but by the good of the money. Don't take me wrong i do admire their commitment and they are great people who deserve to be respected; but if you compare it to a normal person acting heroically, well you will surely find the great difference there is to it. If you are asking if just any human being can be a hero, the answer is yes. There are people like the man in the lake that doesn't have to, but still gives his life for others. Lets go less far than that, think about a father who had to bear the death of her wife and still take care of a little baby; or how about that young boy who died from a car crash trying to push a baby out of the road; or that grandma of yours that even though she is sick to death, she would still stand up to get you to the park just because you want to play... Wouldn't you think that those people should be acknowledged for what they do? and the little part that no one notices, they do it because they love life and nothing else. To me, these people are and will always be the symbol of my admiration. But hey!, that is just my opinion. Att. Heydi Perez
After reading “The Man in the Water” I realized that anybody can be a hero. You don’t have to be a soldier, a firefighter, a police officer, or even have powers. A hero can be a civilian, in reality anybody just like you and me. A true hero is someone that goes out of their own way to help another. It’s like the saying “right or wrong are just words, what matters is what you do.”, everything you do will always be criticized you are the one that decides on what you are going to do. If you have enough courage and bravery to not care for others opinions or be selfless then you are a true hero. For example, in the movie “Guardian” Jake, a coast guard rescue swimmer, goes out on a mission and there was this one guy stuck and no way of getting out. Even though Jakes crew told him “there is no point and no way of saving him you’re just going to kill yourself” he still went and saved the man’s life. That right there makes him a true hero because he was brave and selfless.
After reading "The Man in the Water", I believe that a person who is selfless and puts other people before them is a true epic hero. A true hero is someone who isn't afraid of risking their lives for someone in need of help. For example, the man from the story risked his life and saved the other people from dying. A true hero will help others first before worrying about themselves.
There are also heroes like our moms who are capable of giving everything they have for our sake...mine is my particular hero because she has given me everything i have and i'm who i am because of what she teach me everyday and i know that if there is a person who could give her own life to save mine it will be my mother.
After reading "The Man in the Water" my definition of a true heroe, is someone like Balding. It is an individual who goes out of their way to do something for someone else without any reward in return. A hero is the opposite of being selfish. They care about others more that caring about themselves and they do things to help others even if it means risking their lives. They are inspiring individuals who are always prepared to face life threatning challenges.
To Belinda De La Torre, it is true someone who is not afraid of risking their own lives is a true hero. They are also selfless so they think of others safety first. To Giselle Jimenez, i agree with your statement on how a hero is someone that goes out of their way for someone else not wanting a reward in return. It is like they do it out of the kindness of their heart, making them a true hero.
I believe heroes are brave people who are willing to sacrifice their own benefits and take risks to save lives. They can be either ordinary people, like us, or courageous workers, like firefighters. The man in the water shows his bravery in the accidence, and he is willing to hand over lifesaving ropes to others and ready to sacrifice his valuable life. Nobody can understand his feeling vicariously while he is being rescue, but we can imagine his bravery to overcome the fears of death. It is inevitable that the man in the water is a true hero. I also believe that people like firefighters and policemen are heroes. I am not bothered to see if they get paid or not because their courage is worth a lot. My friend’s father works as a firefighter in China. I visited him when my friend told me her father was injured while rescuing victims. She was proud because her father saved a boy’s life from a burning house, but her father finally fell down. I was excited to visit him because firefighters always saved people’s lives. Firefighters and some brave people are heroes because they show their courage in danger and save lives.
A true hero is someone that truly wants to do something for the greater good it is someone who is unselfish, caring to the point that they will sacrifice everything.A hero can be found anywhere you go such as "The man in the water", he himself was a hero who gave his life to save others as he passed the lifeline to each person he was giving away a piece of his life and filling another persons body with it.There is no true definition for a true hero. But in most spoken words a hero is courageous, righteous unselfish, brave person that can sometimes be seen through our eyes anywhere at the right time such as teachers, parents, firefighters. Also it may be a mom that has giving every bit of power that she has to raise their child the way that they like, giving them intelligence, knowledge about the world around them,or a teacher that has been through an abundant of things just to give their knowledge, pass it on to their students and educate them.Anyone can be a hero in anyway possible.
To Giselle Jimenez I do agree with your statement of that a hero is an individual who goes out of their way to do something for someone else without any reward in return. These heroes right here are the true heroes they simply just want to do the right thing and just that, they don't want fame or to be acknowledged.
To Belinda De La Torre I also do agree with your statement of that a true hero isn't afraid of risking their lives. These kind of heroes hear the call of help and just react to it and help those in need they just want to do the right thing because they feel as they should and want to.
A true hero is anyone who is willing to put their life first to save someone else. A hero can be an Officer, a Teacher, a Firefighter, a Soldier, etc. But, a hero can also be an ordinary person like our parents or friends or fellow neighbors, even we can be a hero to someone. All it takes is to be brave and unselfish. Like the in the article "The Man in the Water" this man was an ordinary person who sacrificed his life to make sure the rest survived. He was not asked to do this he did it out of the kindness of his heart he was selfless. Our parents to us are heros because they do anything they possibly can to make us happy and make sure we are healthy and safe. To me a hero is someone who can give and not except something in return they do it because they either enjoy doing it or because they chose to at that moment. ~Susan Serpa Period 2
Natalia Magdaleno, I agree with you statement that a hero can be found anywhere. A person can be a hero regardless of what it is that they are doing, even if it is the smallest thing we can think of. For example a person who helps an elder with their groceries or helps them cross the street, to an elderly person that person is a hero to them because they took the time to help them out. So yes you are right in my opinion, we can find heros every where and any where we go.
Giselle Jimenez, I also agree with your statement that its true heros are people that care about others more than themselves and are wiling to do things to help others even if it means risking their lives. They are people who are selfless and that is why they can be heros, its hard to find people now and days who cares more about others than themselves. A person who is wiling to risk their life as a big and beautiful heart.
I agree with the statement that a true her can be found anywhere because there are everyday heroes like our teachers who are like our second parents or doctors who give everything they have to save lives or a simple person who just is capable of risking his live to save another person those are not just ordinary people they are corageus and heroic.
Being a hero is a hard task to complete and achieve. In mind, I thought that heroes were those in comics and fictional stories. A true hero has to be determined and love what they do. Like in everything you do, you have to be willing to learn and have a passion for what you are doing. For example, if an individual is drowning in shark infested waters, a hero has to take all the measures necessary to remove that person from the situation.
After reading "Man in the Water", I realized that a hero can be anyone from parents to a firefighter. A true hero has to be motivated, mentally strong and passionate, including all the other qualities mentioned above.
I agree with the responses of both Shelby Matech and Vanessa De La Cruz, because their understanding of what a true hero is, is similar to mine. Shelby stated that a hero has to make sacrifices and be courageous and Vanessa said that anyone can be a hero, which is exactly what I think.
A hero is someone who gives up their lives."The man in the water" is a true hero he was an ordinary man who gave his life to save others for no reason.Heroes can be doctors, teachers, firefighters, actors. It may be anyone from a doctor that's always saving lives,a firefighter that gives his life to save others to a teacher or actor that teachers its students life lessons.
Shelby Matech I agree with you, that Heroes are those who do personal sacrifices even if they have to put their lives in risk. These heroes are willing to do anything to save peoples lives, they really are selfless and unselfish about others.
Natalia Magdaleno I also think that a hero can be someone around us.It doesn't matter if they aren't police officers or firefighters anyone can become a hero,Anyone can do anything for someone else to become a hero it doesn't matter what.
A true hero is someone that's courages. They put others before themselves. A true hero also has to make sacraficies. A true hero saves someone's life with out needing to know the person. In some cases a hero gives up their life to save another and that's exactly what makes them the hero.
Natalia, I agree with you a hero gives their life to save anothers. Also yes anyone can be a hero it's just the matter of when and in what. Like Shelby yes a hero is courages and that's exactly how I think.
After reading The Man in the Water what makes a true hero is someone that helps others and doesn't expect anything in return. Also, a true hero is someone who has confidence and is brave and who beleives that nothing or no one can stop them.
To Vanessa D its true in order to be a hero you don't have to have superpowers or be super strong anyone can be a hero. Any random person can be a hero at anytime. The least person you expect to be a hero can be a hero in their own way.
To Belinda De La Torre its true a true hero has to be selfless so that they can save others. If a hero is selfish then they will only think of themselves and save themselves and not worry about others. A selfless hero with put others in front of them and save their lives first even if it means that the hero must die.
A true hero is someone who dedicates their life to helping and protecting people from harm. I believe everyday heroes are the true heroes. Heroes like cops and firefighters risk their lives daily to help others. To me they are the true heroes
TO Natalia Magdaleno, I agree that ordinary people can be heroes, too. Mother's love is also great and some brave mother sacrifices their own lives to save their children in the earthquake. Also, not only firefighters are heros, we can be heros too.
Selflessness and courage is what makes people know that an individual is a hero. Firefighters and soldiers have these characteristics to help them help others. My fathers best friend is in the marines and he said " A hero doesn't have to risk his life for others to be one but does have to be selfless and courageous to try and act like one. These two characteristics are what a true hero should have.
I completely agree with both Miguel and Robert's responses. Certain traits can make a regular person into an incredible hero.
to Melissa, I agree that heros must be mentally strong.People who are only physically strong can't be heros because they may be afraid to rescue others.
There are many things that make a true hero. For one a hero must be strong, both physically and mentally. Not only should a hero be strong but they should be intelligent. The reason for this being, you want a hero that knows and have an idea of what they are doing. For example, you don't want a doctor who isn't that smart to perform open heart surgery on you do you? The last characteristics that i believe are in a true hero are dedication and passion. You need to be dedicated and passionate at what you do. If you are not dedicated you will do the work sloppy and not give you 100% effort. Why would we want a hero such as spider man or batman for example only doing half the work because they are not fully dedicated to saving the humans in danger. Passionate because you have to love what you do. Those are the characteristics are in a true hero in my opinion.
To Vanessa De La Cruz, I agree that a hero can be anybody. Anybody can step up and be selfless about helping somebody without having to be a firefighter or police. It doesn't take specialized training to be considered a hero.
To Natalia Magdaleno, I agree that there really isn't a true definition for a hero. To be considered a hero, there are different ways in doing this but it will most likely be someone who is courageous and will risk their lives for others.
A hero is someone who shows great courage and strength in the face of adversity heroes don't think of themselves as heroes, they just do the right thing. Heoes don't do these hereoic efforts to gain popularity or to be considered better than anyone else. A true hero enjoys doing their job.
After reading "Man in the Water" i learned that a hero doesnt have to be somone special, as it could be a spider man thats there when u need help, it could also be your dad that gives you advice to help you live better day by day.
I agree with Melissa Prat's comment because more or less she got the same idea of what a hero is from reading " Man in the Water".
I also agree with Shelby Matech's because her definition of a hero is very similar to mine, we both think that heros are courageous individuals that are ready to serve whenever you need them.
A true hero, is someone who acts off instinct to help or save someone. These people deviate from their normal life and risk their life to save or help someone else, like the man in the water who from the beginning probably knew he wasn't going to make it, and for sure the longer he stayed in the water realized he wasn't going to make it out alive. These people don't do these courageous acts for publicity, they do it because they genuinely care. True heroes also help those in need even though they know it will probably affect them negatively and not because they have to but because they feel in their heart it is the right thing to do. Like those people who give money to those who fell on hard times. These true heroes are selfless, and brave.
I agree with Robert a true hero doesn't expect anything in return for his courageous actions. They do it for the satisfaction they receive from knowing they did good.
I agree with Giselle true heroes care more about others than they do themselves. They put others lives before their own.
A true hero can be defined as a selfless, brave, courageous, clever, honorable and/or a respected being. Truth is, a true hero can be anyone, from your next door neighbor to your high school counselor to the local police dog. A hero is beyond the stereotypical cartoons; you know, those who wear the capes and go around fighting crime. A hero is someone who is willing to risk their life to aid a person in trouble. Whether you help save a drowning being or help bring down your grandmothers cat from a tree, it takes selflessness and a hand full of courage to step up and help another.
To Giselle Jimenez: I completely agree, any individual who is willing to go out of their way to help another without the need of something in return is definitely a true hero. The act of being selfish isn’t a trait a hero should uphold, on the contrary, he/she should be the opposite.
To Melissa Prat: I agree with your response, a real hero can be someone like you and I. All it takes is a little motivation and some strength to help overcome such an obstacle.
after reading "man in the water" the reader can see that not all heroes in the world are being recognized. the sad part is that most of them don't even get recognized till they die. to be a true hero you don't need to have the incredible super powers. in my opinion you just need to have a big heart. a hero is a leader, someone we all look up to at some point. heroes always try to guide every one to the right path and always put themselves last. someone selfless enough to give up their life for another human being. just like in the story, the man drowned for everyone else. a hero is always someone that is strong in every sense of that word. especially emotionally strong. which is what gives them the motivation to keep changing lives everyday. heroes definitely impact peoples lives and their perspectives towards life. heroes are living proof to see that yes, the world does consist of many murderers and criminals, but there are still many people left who are kind at heart. those people will always be here to help out no matter what.
i agree with Brandon when he said heroes don't do things for publicity but because they truly care. there might be people out there who just want an audience and lots of attention. that most definitely is NOT a true hero.
i agree with roly when he says that heroes must always give 100%. if you only put half of the effort then you're really not accomplishing much. it is very important that you set an example for others that you always have to put all of your effort and dedication into everything you do.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Robert a true hero doesn't expect anything in return for his courageous actions.
ReplyDeleteTo Giselle Jimenez: I completely agree, any individual who is willing to go out of their way to help another without the need of something in return is definitely a true hero.

ReplyDeletei agree with Brandon when he said heroes don't do things for publicity but because they truly care. there might be people out there who just want an audience and lots of attention. that most definitely is NOT a true hero.
i agree with roly when he says that heroes must always give 100%. if you only put half of the effort then you're really not accomplishing much. it is very important that you set an example for others that you always have to put all of your effort and dedication into everything you do.
